Caring for your new cat

If you have decided to have a kitten, you will soon understand the responsibilities that come with it, such as spending adequate time with your pet, pampering it, and making sure you take care of any cat health problems that may arise. Since different cat breeds have different characteristics, you should try to learn as much as possible about your pet’s specific healthcare needs.

Officially there are about forty breeds of cats in the world that are internationally recognized. Although there are many more sub-breeds present, these are not officially listed. It can be quite easy to tell the difference between long-haired and short-haired cats. Some like the British shorthair, the Abyssinian, the Burmese, the Havanese chestnut or the American shorthair breed even have their own unique characteristics that allow them to stand out from the rest. Persian cats, Siamese cats, Maine Coons, etc. are some other varieties of pedigree cat breeds among others. Although most house cats do not look alike, they are not generally classified into different breeds.

Caring for specific cat breeds requires knowledge of that particular breed. However, there are some common things that all cat owners can do. For starters, keep a close eye on your pet’s health during its growing years. Kittens are prone to infections, fever, and other health problems in cats during their early years. You will have to give him proper nutrition and seek medical attention the moment you find something wrong. You should also keep your pet involved in various activities and make him feel comfortable and safe. Even after your kitten has grown, stay alert for common symptoms of cat health problems so your pet continues to enjoy a healthy life.

Breeding is another important issue that requires special attention. Since some cat breeds are not suitable for breeding, as the process could put the cat’s life at risk, you should neuter your pet if your cat belongs to those breeds. Neutering the female can also prevent many cat health problems, such as uterine infections and cancer in later life, while neutered males show less aggression and violence.

You should also take your pet to a vet for regular check-ups. Since the symptoms of some cat health problems can often be difficult to notice, these regular visits to the vet can help you deal with problems, if any, at the right time.
