Have you ever wondered how hazardous chemicals are transported?

Rubber for the transport of chemical products by road

When it comes to chemical transportation, ensuring the safety of your products and the people who work with them is a priority. In this industry, durable rubber sealing solutions are paramount.

Rubber products must undergo rigorous testing and testing to ensure complete safety. As such, experts have created rubber products with the highest possible chemical resistance. These include:

* Discharge valve seals

* pump seals

* Manhole cover and access hatch seals

* o-rings

* PTFE seals bonded

Materials for chemical transport seals

There are a multitude of materials that have proven to withstand the challenges of the chemical road transportation industry, including FFKM (Perfluoroelastomer), FKM (Fluoroelastomer) and PTFE. Rubber products used in this industry must be highly resistant to chemicals, but must also perform in extreme temperature ranges.

PTFE is known for its hygienic properties, but for the transport of chemicals, one of the essential aspects of this material is its ability to be easily cleaned. This is especially important for the transport of chemicals as it reduces the risk of contamination from one load to another and allows seals to be reused, providing a cost effective solution. As a result, PTFE/rubber union seals are a popular choice for the chemical road transportation industry.

Another high performance polymer for this particular industry is perfluoroelastomer (FFKM). A critical requirement of the chemical road transport industry is chemically resistant rubber sealing. Most FFKM materials have been thoroughly tested and proven in service to offer resistance to a wide variety of chemicals. They can also work on low temperature (-40°c) and high temperature (316°c) materials to perform at extreme temperatures.

More about FKM

FFKM O-rings offer exceptional chemical and thermal resistance. They combine the sealing strength, toughness and recovery characteristics of a normal elastomer O-ring with the added chemical resistance of PTFE. FFKM’s carbon-fluorine bonds, considered to be the strongest single bond in organic chemistry, ensure the high chemical, thermal and oxidation resistance of our finished O-ring products.

An increase in the fluorine content increases the chemical resistance of hydrocarbons. As such, FFKM contains 72.5% fluorine with a fully fluorinated backbone, which is the highest possible fluorination while retaining the elastomeric properties required for sealing systems. FFKM’s ether group (ROR) gives it its elastomeric properties and elasticity, without which FFKM would act much like PTFE.
