How to take care of pets

In today’s busy, self-centered world, when no one has time for anyone else, the pets in our homes are the best friends and companions we can hope to have! The joy and enthusiasm with which my dog greets me when I come home at the end of a long and hard day at work immediately lifts my spirits and any exhaustion that I bring with me fades into thin air. Pets are loyal, faithful, unconditional and spontaneous in their love and they benefit us in various ways.

In return, it is important for us to ensure that we also take care of our pets in the best possible way.

Here are some key ways you can ensure that you are a responsible pet owner and caretaker.

Space: pets must have a safe, dry, clean and cozy place. While we deliberate on the choice of our pets, we must carefully consider the space that will require for the aquarium for our fish, the corner for our cat or dog or the cage for the lovebirds that we so much want to have. If an entire room is too much to think about, you can create a clear, demarcated boundary for your furry friend.

Diet: Depending on the pet you own, you should strive to ensure that it is fed a balanced and nutritious diet. Each species and race, in turn, has allowed foods and those that can cause more harm than good. Be sure to check with your vet and feed your pet only the right kinds of food and the right portions. Just as food must be carefully monitored, you must also ensure that your pet has adequate and clean drinking water available.

Exercise: All pets need their space to flex their muscles and spread their wings. Pets like dogs should go for regular walks. Domestic birds should have enough room in their cages so they don’t feel cramped. A daily exercise routine will ensure that your pets are healthy and happy.

Medical Care: Regular check-ups with the vet will make sure your pet is healthy and help diagnose any ailments well in advance. Immunizations must be administered in a timely and disciplined manner.

Cleanliness: All pets have cleanliness and hygiene needs. Pets such as cats and dogs should be bathed and groomed regularly to keep their fur, hair, nails, and skin well groomed. The area in which your pets are housed should be cleaned and washed daily to keep the surroundings clean and free of pests. Also be sure to keep your pet free of parasites such as fleas, ticks, and worms. Fish bowls or aquarium water should be changed in a proper and timely manner.

Supervision: While most pets once trained and common in their environment tend to remain safe, it is important that a new pet is supervised until they become familiar with the terrain. Inadvertently leaving the cage open could allow the parrot or parakeet to escape, and running through a slightly ajar door could allow the puppy or kitten to bolt out into the street, which could be potentially dangerous.
