Novel Review: Twingle Twangle by Femi Osofisan – Part Two

Along the seashore, Kehinde and Digbaro wandered day and night, finally reaching the outskirts of a town called Etido where Oba Moluwe, the Olodo of Etido, reigns. To the outskirts came the Olodo and other prominent caciques to make a great sacrifice to a demon named Bilisi (a river monster), who always claims the most beautiful virgin each year. However, during this unlucky year, poor Olodo’s only daughter, Lawumi, turned out to be her victim and will be offered to Bilisi as a sacrifice. At the point of sacrifice, where Digbaro and Kehinde were hiding, the Olodo made frantic efforts not to release his only daughter after revealing the hidden secret. Although the daughter insisted on offering herself for sacrifice for the good of the village, with her is her servant, Aanu, who vowed to die with her chief.

Sooner, all the people left the scene, leaving the two waiting for death, for Bilisi to come and attack them. In fact, Bilisi came out and was about to feed on them when Digbaro and Kehinde, who were hiding, came to their rescue and killed the monster.

Taye and Efundunke were not having it easy in the forest. At last they came to a small town where they thought they might be able to get food and water, but it seemed to them that it was a ghost town since there was no one in it. However, the town was celebrating its annual festival where the Oba Elenon of Ereko will give her daughter, Tinuade, and half of her inheritance to anyone who dares to win his final exam. The Officer, the businessman, the professor lost because they couldn’t swallow the hot soup at the same time.

From then on, Taye came out of her secret place and, like Efundunke, to fight for the princess, but not with the intention of winning but rather of satisfying her hunger. Efundunke resisted him, but he refused, preferring instead to face the judgment that whoever lost would be killed. In the end, he won and received the princess for a wife whom he rejected. Rejecting the princess, ultimately, was also a grave sin. This insulting habit or attitude landed him in prison.

In the town of Etido, Kehinde became king; A problem arose due to a newborn baby that all the citizens were celebrating for, but Kehinde saw this as idleness along with consecutive wars that wasted the lives of his citizens. They called him a dictator and rose up against him and plotted his impeachment. Therefore, he decided that before leaving his throne, he needed to fight one last town, which is the town of Ereko.

Taye in the village of Ereko became king after the death of the incumbent king and married the king’s daughter, Tinuade. He, despite the news that the most powerful people of Etido are coming to wage war against his people, advised his people not to be cowardly but to be ready to welcome the war warriors with food, drinks, etc. They did so well, hitting, making soup, eating, getting married, while the war came even to their doorstep. Recognizing himself, Kehinde nevertheless gave Taye a series of conditions so that he would not destroy his village, which he agreed to all his offers.

The joy continued for a long time until all the soldiers got drunk and fell asleep. All of their weapons were packed and gathered together with all of them bound hand and leg, including their leader, Kehinde. So, the people of Taye, Ereko won. The twins then went home after their adventure.
