Temptation is so tempting

At the beginning of the week, the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage informed me that she and some of her friends were going shopping at a thrift store on Thursday.

I nodded and smiled, not knowing where I was going with this.

“Now,” he said, “you’ll have to take care of your lunch. Do you think you can do that?”

He was smiling so hard inside that I could barely hide it from my face.

“Well,” I said as calmly as possible, “I think I can take care of it. No problem.”

That meant I could eat my lunch whenever I wanted. My wife is very strict with the rules and regulations. Everything has to be done at a certain time and in a certain way.

On Thursday morning, the kind lady of the parsonage said, “Do you remember what is going to happen today?”

I remembered? How the hell could I forget?

I looked at her seriously and said, “If I remember correctly, you and some of your friends are going shopping at a thrift store.”

She smiled and then said, “Are you sure you can get your own lunch?”

“I’ll be able to cope,” I said, still trying to hide the giggling laugh inside me.

I walked her to the door, greeted her very happily as she stepped out of the driveway and disappeared into the sunset.

In my mind, I had prepared myself for this moment. I planned to go to McDonald’s and buy a bunch of double cheeseburgers, fries, and smoothies to help me get through the day.

Oh yeah, McDonald’s has one of my favorite desserts, apple fritters. Although I’m not allowed to take them home, today was different, so I decided to buy two apple fritters.

Right before lunch, I went to McDonald’s and bought my fancy lunch, including the apple fritters.

I was very excited to get home and enjoy a lunch that would not make my wife very happy. But since she’s not here, and I’m not going to tell her, I’m going to have the best time of my life for lunch. Especially those delicious apple fritters.

I got home, set the table for lunch, and began the process of enjoying myself.

I made the majority of my lunch and got close to that wonderful point of delving into a delicious apple fritter.

Leaving those two apple fritters on my plate, I enjoyed seeing the beauty of a perfect dessert.

Just as he was about to pick one up, the phone rang. That is all I needed.

As I answered the phone, the person on the other end introduced himself and began his sales pitch on my car warranty. My auto warranty, they claimed, had run out, and this was their “last” call to renew this warranty.

I jumped up and politely said, “No thanks. I don’t need your guarantee.” Then I hung up the phone.

I took a deep breath and went back to the table, looked at my apple fritters and reveled in the delicious experience of eating them. Then, just as he was ready to pick up the first one, the phone rang again.

Very hesitant, I got up and went to answer the phone. This time it was a recorded message about an arrest warrant that was issued for my arrest somewhere in Texas. So all he had to do was press number 1.

I hung up very angry and went back to the table, sat down and took a deep breath, and once again looked at those wonderful apple fritters.

Before I could clear my mind, the phone rang again. At that moment, there was a whirlwind of anger bubbling in my mind.

I answered the phone, someone introduced themselves and said they are sending me a diabetic machine according to my doctor. And it was FREE.

Is it wrong to tell someone what you think? And what piece am I going to give this person?

Without dwelling on this too much, I simply opened up and gave this person a part of my mind that I have never used before. I was so tempted to say things that would be very inappropriate. I was expressing my anger like I had never expressed it before.

Having someone come between me and my Apple Fritter is a very dangerous place. So I explained to the person on the phone how idiotic they were, as if they didn’t already know it, and that I didn’t appreciate being called, especially at this time of day.

Then I heard the magical “click” sound. He was no longer on the phone.

Sitting back at the table, I looked at my apple fritters and, as I ate my first bite, I thought of a scripture verse that means a lot to me.

“No temptation has come upon you that is not common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted more than you can; but with the temptation he will also open a way of escape, so that you will be able to bear it. “(1 Corinthians 10:13).

There is a hymn that says: “Do not give in to temptation, because to give in is sin.” Temptations are there all the time, but God can give me the strength not to give in to them. I can’t control the temptation, but I can give in.
