The good and bad of computer music production

If you’re a musically creative person, you may have considered making music on your own on a computer. These days, with today’s computer technology, it’s truly amazing what can be accomplished with just one person and a minimal amount of equipment.

low cost

One of the main benefits of making music on a computer is the low cost involved. Once you’ve bought some good music software, a good MIDI keyboard controller, and some good speakers, you’re ready to go. It’s not like in the past, where only big recording studios or very wealthy musicians could afford big expensive recording equipment and mixing consoles.

Perfect for control freaks.

Many creative people like to do things their own way and have full control of the creative process. The problem with being in a band is that you have to compromise. Well, it’s either that or one of you has to take control and order the other gang members around. When you make music on your own on your computer, you are in complete control and don’t have to compromise or depend on anyone else.

The downside of making music on your own is that you can’t interact and socialize with other band members like you would if you were part of a band. There is something to be said for being creative with other people and being part of a team. Also, if a band works well together, they can often bring out the best in each other, and the end result will be the combination of the best musical qualities of each member.

Creativity at the touch of a button

With computers these days you have so many sounds and effects at the touch of a button. This is great if you don’t want to waste time. As soon as you come up with a musical idea, you can start bringing it to life on the computer.

The downside to this, though, is that you may end up spending too much time sitting in front of a computer, and this isn’t really a very inspiring place to be. By always sitting in the same room in front of a computer, you can sometimes miss out on other creatively inspiring things. However, one possible way around this is to use a laptop, which would allow you to play music on the computer while you are outside, for example while sitting in your garden.

Conclution

Music technology has advanced by leaps and bounds in recent years, along with computing power. This has broadened the reach of someone making music on their own in their bedroom on a low budget. However, we must not forget the importance of collaborating with other people and experiencing other environments and creative processes.
