A guide to the town of Cliffden Ireland

Clifden is the capital of the picturesque region known as Connemara, 80 km west of Galway in Ireland. The town itself is the largest in Connemara with a population of over 800.

This picturesque town at the head of Clifden Bay straddles the Owenglin River and consists of quaint houses crammed into winding streets with the only buildings of any height being the town’s churches and their steep spires.

The town is set against the backdrop of the Twelve Bens mountain range to the east of the town and it is this scenery and location that makes Clifden the perfect base from which to base yourself for those exploring Connemara. The area offers excellent opportunities for an outdoor holiday with plenty of angling options, hiking trails, mountaineering for the more adventurous and, of course, a wonderful display of nature and wildlife.

Many visitors to Connemara choose to experience the countryside by bike. This is the ideal way to see this countryside at a pace in keeping with the quiet pace of life in the region. There are several places in the city where you can rent bikes.

The nearby Connemara Walking Center offers guided walking trips to local sites of geographical and natural interest in the areas. The Center also provides maps and route details for walkers and cyclists.

For those who wish to partake in a less demanding outdoor activity, the riding center at Errislannan (3km south of Clifden) can hire ponies to ride along Clifden beach or alternatively for excursions into the hills that surround the town. Beginner lessons are also offered.

After completing all these outdoor activities, you’ll certainly work up an appetite and Clifden doesn’t disappoint by providing multiple options.

In the center of town is EJ Kings on the Square, which offers the option of hearty pub grub year-round in its pub and the option of slightly more formal dining in the adjoining restaurant. Seafood lovers will love Clifden’s dining options. Salmon Leap Seafood Restaurant and O’Grady’s Seafood Restaurant are the two standout options in the city, and O’Grady’s is considered one of the best restaurants in County Galway.

Accommodation options in and around the town range from Clifden’s hotels and B&Bs to a variety of hostels (all associated with IHH) open all year round.

Buses run daily from Galway to Clifden and Westport on Bus Eireann, although the timetable can change with the season, so be sure to check this and other information at the Clifden tourist office (on Market Street; open March to October) or in Galway. Tourist office.
