Frugal Travel Tips for Dining in Las Vegas

Las Vegas cuisine is world famous. Casinos compete with each other to offer the best dining options, from high-end to buffet and too-good-to-be-true deals. In this article, we will explore some of the dining options for the frugal traveler.

Ellis Island $4.95 Steak Special

For $4.95, diners at Ellis Island (located on Koval Lane, east of E Flamingo Road) get a 10-ounce steak, bread, potatoes (choice of portion), and vegetables. It must be a cheap cut, right? Wrong. This steak is delicious. This special is not on the menu, you have to ask for it.

But that’s not what I order. I order the $6.95 fish and chips. There’s a reason this Icelandic cod (the waiter said they brought it in every day) has been voted the best in Las Vegas for 35 years.

Burger in and out

If you’re a fast food addict, then In-N-Out Burger is the place to go (multiple locations). Their official menu consists of a hamburger, a cheeseburger, a double-double (two patties), fries, and a drink (including milkshakes). There’s a reason they can keep their menu so simple and that’s because the few items they do, they do well. The store claims not to have a freezer, everything is so fresh. Even the lettuce is cut by hand and the fries are cut in the restaurant, one potato at a time.

The Village Buffet in Paris for brunch

If you’re looking for a lavish meal in Las Vegas, I’d suggest Le Village Buffet at the Paris Casino for brunch. By brunch, I mean go there at the end of breakfast time (serves until 11am) and then stay for lunch (starts at 11am).

Why do this?

The selection is changed for diners to experience more (watch your pace) but most of all breakfast price is $12.95, lunch price is $17.95. Yes, quite a difference. $5.00 per dinner.

This technique can be used with many buffets as long as there is not a break between meals. Also check if you get a discount with a member/player card.

There are many, many other bargain-priced foods in Vegas, including $0.75 hot dogs at the Gold Coast and $0.99 shrimp cocktails at the Golden Gate (the tradition started over 40 years ago), but Ellis Island, In-N- Out and Le Village Buffet are my favourites.
