HDL cholesterol

According to figures from the American Heart Association, more than 50 percent of Americans have lower-than-desirable cholesterol levels. This means that everyone else in the United States is at risk for heart disease due to high cholesterol levels. There are two types of cholesterol: HDL and LDL. Since HDL is the good cholesterol, it should be at least 40 mg/dL; less than this number is a significant risk. But what is HDL cholesterol?

HDL, or high-density lipoproteins, is the type of cholesterol that carries bad cholesterol, or LDL, from the arteries to the liver. This type of cholesterol also removes excess cholesterol from plaque and slows its growth. HDL is often referred to as the good cholesterol. Because of this, there is a need to have a high level of HDL in the body to protect against heart attack.

The ideal number for HDL levels is at least 40 mg/dL. However, the number can vary for men and women, but it should never be more than 60 mg/dL for both because this would mean a higher risk of stroke and heart disease.

HDL is said to be outnumbered by LDL by about 3 to 1. That’s why it’s important to increase your HDL cholesterol level by eating a low-cholesterol diet, avoiding foods high in saturated fats and trans-fatty acids, and participating in the usual exercise. A low-cholesterol diet includes foods such as fish, lean meat, skinless poultry, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods to avoid, on the other hand, include processed foods, egg yolks, high-fat dairy products, and poultry. Also, exercise should be done regularly at least several times a week. This will not only lower your cholesterol level, but also improve your overall health.

HDL is, in fact, an important substance in the body. A low level of HDL can pose a great threat to the body as it can increase the risk of stroke.
