The next generation of employees

There are many materials on the Internet that provide information on generations (Baby Boomers, X, Millennials, etc.) and, most importantly, on how their work habits differ. However, not much is known about the youngest of them: the so-called Generation Z (later labeled Z’ers). The first children representing this generation were born in 1996 and it is still debatable when this generation ends. Generally, most people agree during 2014. It is important to shed some light on the subject because in a few years they will be the largest workforce on the market.

Major events like the financial crisis and terrorist attacks have left their mark on people born after 1996. Perhaps the biggest difference between them and Millennials is that Z’ers are less optimistic about the future compared to their ancestors. The insecurity they feel is due to the lack of financial and political stability. Despite that, an interesting trend is observed. Fewer students than ever work during summer break. Probably a possible explanation for this phenomenon is the fact that their parents (Generation X and Y) earn more money compared to previous generations. Also, employers should pay attention to the fact that salary alone is not a motivation for Gen Z. It is much more important to have a job that makes the world a better place. They like to participate in social activities such as helping to solve environmental problems, fight world hunger, rescue animals, etc. It is of great importance to know that the culture and goals of an organization make a big difference when representatives of Generation Z are looking for work. They will undoubtedly prefer a less paid job in a company with a social conscience rather than a better paid workplace without a social conscience.

With regard to technology, Generation Z is the first generation that has no memories of a world without the Internet and social networks. Quick access to any kind of information and communication over the Internet is taken for granted, it is not a luxury for the Z’ers. More than 70% of the children in this generation have smartphones and computers. This is why they spend most of their everyday life on social media, texting peers, and following celebrities. The main characteristic of these young people is their tolerance towards difference. This means that they are open-minded and can work and live with everyone, regardless of gender, origin, or religious beliefs. Prejudice is not common among Z’ers mainly because Internet communication allows them to meet people from all over the world.

Representatives of Generation Z are believed to be great entrepreneurs. This belief is mainly based on their high education, which makes them complex workers. Much of their skills are acquired thanks to the technologies they have used since they were little. Old school education is not something you can trust. For example, they seem to dislike teachers who simply present them with information that is easily accessible on the web. A good knowledge of the technologies and an understanding of how they really work can help Z’ers run their own business one day in terms of advertising and presenting a product to the right audience. Your job is not just work. Employers must create workplaces that make sense and provide excitement, satisfaction, and visible results. As employees, Z’ers have many requirements, so companies must live up to their expectations if they want to win them. Things like social engagement, open-mindedness, and tolerance are of great importance to Gen Z. And finally, one thing this generation is really good at: multitasking. You can really trust your reps when it comes to multitasking.
