The fourth group is called carvers; they blend art and craft by carving stone and rock into plants, characters, animals, and even abstract designs. This work requires incredible skill and talent, a carver is considered one of the most skilled stonemasons. Repair masons are the fifth group. They serve one purpose, to place stone work on buildings. They use lifting equipment and staples and plugs, as well as cements and epoxy resins to adhere masonry to buildings in general.
Finally, the sixth groups of masons are called memorial masons who carve one thing, tombstones. The modern bricklayer goes through a long and grueling number of classes and apprenticeships. A mason is skilled in the art of working with all types of stone and working with a host of sculpting tools. It takes quite some time before someone can become a journeyman mason and they need to spend a good amount of time working under the guidance of a very experienced mason.
