What is the largest quilt made?

If you’ve ever found yourself struggling to cover yourself at night, then you can appreciate why an oversized duvet or comforter would be a good choice. In the US, mattress sizes are fairly standardized and typically range from the sizes shown below:

  • Double 39″ x 75″

  • Twin XL 39″ x 80″

  • Full 54″ x 75″

  • Queen 60″ x 80″

  • King 76″ x 80″

Please note that Olympic queen beds, split kings, and other specialty sizes are not covered here due to fewer beds being sold in the US.

Most mattresses are between 12″ and 15″ these days, with some maxing out at 22″ to 24″ tall. Why do beds come in so many sizes? Of course, there is a marketing story involved as well as how some furniture manufacturers use platform beds that may need higher mattress heights to allow comfortable entry into the bed. In America, bigger is better, and this also applies to down comforters and down alternative comforters.

One of the most common complaints consumers have regarding comforters, blankets, and comforters is how small the items can be. This is because many retail stores have fixed retail prices at which to sell items, and manufacturers work backwards to achieve those prices. Item sizes are cut smaller to save fabric, stuffing, and labor hours. As a result, it’s very common for a queen-sized comforter sold in stores to be marked full/queen, which is just a nice way of saying it’s tiny and tiny.

This craze for smaller sizing also applies to king-size bedding, and as a result, many consumers are sizing up their bedding for a better fit. So if someone has a queen size bed, buy the king size set on sale to make it a good fit. This works fine for queen size bedding, but what if you have a king size bed?

In US department stores, a King comforter can range in size from 102″ x 86″ to 108″ x 98″, with the latter being referred to as an oversize. Generally speaking, the 108″ x 98″ king comforter is large enough for most consumers. However, if you have a deep, luxurious bed, or if you constantly have tug-of-war at night with the duvets, then you may want to consider the extra-large sizes. An oversized comforter can measure between 116″ x 100″, 120″ x 98″, or 114″ x 118″. Oversized comforters are sometimes called designer kings. These oversized comforters are great because you get extra coverage without having to buy a custom made comforter which can be very expensive.

One thing to consider when shopping for a super king size comforter is that you will need a duvet cover to fit the super king size comforter. Many bedding catalogs offer oversized comforters that fit the 116″ x 100″ size range, but most don’t cover larger super kings like 120″ x 98″ or 114″ x 118″.
