Shaklee just announced a new product line. These are children’s products and are called the ShakleeKids line. One of the new products on offer is a DHA dietary supplement called Mighty Smart. Mighty Smart contains the essential omega-3 fatty acid DHA and comes in a convenient and tasty orange-flavored chew. This is very important, as normal sources of DHA for children are in foods that young children do not normally enjoy (fish and liver).
What is DHA? Because it is important?
DHA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid that plays many roles in supporting early brain and vision development. Among other things, it promotes cell-to-cell communication and supports the production of brain chemicals that control mood and behavior. A shortage of certain brain chemicals has been shown to be a factor in children with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It is very important that all young children have a diet that provides them with all essential nutrients. This is very difficult to do for all the necessary vitamins and minerals, especially for young children.
That is why a dietary supplement regimen is highly recommended for all children.
Children’s brains develop very quickly after birth. By age 5, a child’s brain is three times larger than it was at birth. DHA supports brain health and normal brain function, including memory, focus, concentration, and attention. At birth, DHA makes up about 97% of all omega-3 fatty acids in the brain and 93% in the retina. To help maintain these levels, children should consume DHA on a regular basis. The critical need for DHA in children’s development is well known, but is not well understood by many parents.
How much DHA do children need?
Studies show that some children don’t get enough of this important brain nutrient, which is prevalent in fish and certain meats like liver. Not only do children dislike the taste of such foods, but parents fear the health risks associated with most seafood. Most children don’t get enough DHA from diet alone. Studies in the US have found that most take only 20-40mg a day. Mighty Smart provides 100 mg of DHA per chew, which is the level required by healthy developing children.
