The versatility of home woodworking

There are many things you can do with woodworking, and woodworking at home is one of the most rewarding. Some people like to make furniture or pieces that they intend to sell; Some people just find it a fun hobby to spend time in an enjoyable and constructive way. Other people want to be able to do a lot of things for their home, and home woodworking is one of the best possible applications for your new skill. Not only will you save money by making pieces for yourself when you learn to work with wood at home, but you will also personalize your space and create a warm feeling in your home that no store bought item can duplicate.

All spaces in your home can benefit from joinery. Let’s start from the front.

There are some great pieces you can make for your lobby, hallway, or front entrance. Making a round or square umbrella stand is a great touch, especially if you live in a place where inclement weather is the norm. Snowy and rainy locations also benefit from mitten chests and coat hangers or racks. You can even build a little seat to sit on while putting on and taking off your shoes, and I know someone who made a really cool shoe rack to sit by your front door.

Next we have the living room. There are many items that are perfect to make in your living room that are great home woodworking applications. Bookshelves are a great thing to do, as are book ends. You can make them tall or short, wide or slim, whatever suits your space. You can make cabinets and display cabinets for all your decorations or precious items. You can even make some of the bigger furniture. Coffee tables are relatively easy to put together and can be beautifully customized and finished to match the rest of your decor. You can also make other tables for plants or other decorations. Card tables are good to have if you have a space to play with, and you can even build the chairs for them.

Home offices are a natural place to build some furniture. Obviously the main thing you can do for your home office is a sturdy desk to work with. Working from a large, sturdy desk that you built yourself has something that nothing from IKEA can touch. Besides, you can also make shelves and drawers for your important equipment, tools and papers.

Kitchens are also great places to make an item or two. While many kitchen cabinets are in place, there is nothing stopping you from learning how to replace your cabinets with something more appropriate to your tastes. You can also make a large kitchen table or small pantries.

Finally, if you’re feeling really ambitious, you can bring your woodworking skills to your bedroom furniture. Perhaps the best use for your skills is building a custom bed for yourself. Your bed is where you spend a third of your life, and taking the time, energy, and resources to make a bed that will make you exceptionally happy is an investment that will pay off.
